The department has 6 working programs to manage the wildlife resources such as The Parks and Recreation Program, The Freshwater Fisheries Management Program, The Wildlife Management Program, The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Program, The Law Enforcement Program and The Support Services Program. It is also known as Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks that is governed by people appointed by the Governor for a 5 year term. It also sponsors different public education programs regarding fishing licenses, wildlife resources, etc.
