USCIS or US Citizenship and Immigration Services is a part of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It took over the works of the previous department known with the name of United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), that works under the Department of Justice. It has to perform many functions and duties such as to eliminate immigration case backlogs; to promote national security and to improve customer services. The department consist of many members and all of them are headed by a director who reports directly to the Deputy Secretary for Homeland Security. The department is having number of offices of their own in the country for the convenience of the people of the United States and other countries. Its main duties are like processing immigrant visa petitions, naturalization petitions, asylum and refugee applications, granting citizenship and lawful permanent resident status to the people of other countries living in the United States, and take judicial decisions performed at the service centers, and taking control of all other immigration services.
